Apostille Manitoba: Reliable Authentication Services in Canada
As of January 11, 2024, Canada has aligned its authentication services with the Hague Apostille Convention, ensuring that documents issued in Canada, including Manitoba, are easily accepted across 120+ countries.
Apostille Services in Manitoba and Changes to Authentication of Documents Across Canada
Before using Canadian documents or foreign documents abroad, these often require either authentication or an apostille issued to confirm the authenticity of the official’s signature on the original document. If the document was issued for a country that is not a party to the Apostille Convention, it may need to be legalized through that country’s authorities—such as an embassy, high commission, or consulate. However, if you obtain an apostille for documents issued for a country within the Apostille Convention, it will generally be accepted without further steps.
Canada has joined the Hague Apostille Convention since January 11, 2024, simplifying authentication services by removing the need for legalization of documents issued for use in other member countries. With more than 120 countries participating, any document issued by the Government of Canada—or a notarized document authenticated by a Canadian authority will receive an apostille certificate, also called an allonge, securely attached to the main authenticated document.

Our Latest Thoughts on Canadian Documents
Frequently Asked Questions
What Could Disqualify a Document from Receiving an Apostille?
Documents must bear an original signature or seal; photocopies or documents without these are ineligible for an apostille. If a document’s seal or signature cannot be verified, authentication cannot proceed. Documents that have been glued or laminated are ineligible for stamping. Documents covered with a protective coating that prevents stamping cannot be apostilled.
Documents from religious institutions, such as baptismal or marriage certificates, do not qualify for an apostille.
The Department of Foreign Affairs of Canada only authenticates documents issued within Canada; foreign-issued documents are not accepted. Documents from unrecognized educational institutions cannot receive an apostille.
Global Affairs Canada may decline to place an apostille on documents suspected of being misleading or potentially used for fraudulent or illegal purposes and may refer the matter to the appropriate authorities if needed.
Is Document Notarization Required Before Applying for an Apostille Certificate?
Certain documents must be notarized by a notary public before they can be authenticated by a competent authority, including documents issued by the Government of Canada. The territory where your document is notarized determines the appropriate competent authority to which it should be submitted.
Additionally, notarizing specific copies can greatly reduce the time required for apostille issuance. The Legalization Service Centre (LSC) collaborates with official notaries across various provinces and can guide you through this process, ensuring your document is ready, regardless of where your document originates in Canada.
Is Document Translation Required Before Applying for an Apostille?
If your document, in part or in full, is written in a language other than English or French, you will need an official translation by a certified translator who is a member of a recognized provincial translators’ association.
Alternatively, you may work with a Canadian notary fluent in both English and/or French and the original language of the document. In this case, the notary must include a specific certification endorsement on the document.
The most suitable method of verification for a document in another language is determined on a case-by-case basis. In both instances, the Legalization Service Centre (LSC) can assist with this process, ensuring your document is properly prepared as part of obtaining an apostille, so it meets all requirements in Canada and for documents issued abroad.
How Long Does the Apostille Process Take for Canadian Documents?
As of late September 2024, the authentication section at Global Affairs Canada typically completes apostille requests within 10 business days. An additional 5 business days should be allowed for the return shipment of your documents.
Since the change when the Apostille Convention took effect on January 11, 2024, provincial competent authorities, are also authorized to legalize documents. Processing times with these authorities may vary depending on the specific organization.
At the Legalization Service Centre (LSC), we recognize the importance of receiving apostilled documents without delay. We use our expertise and partnerships to expedite the process wherever possible. Our record for obtaining an apostille is one business day.
What Other Factors Should You Consider When Obtaining an Apostille?
The cost for apostille services depend on the type of document and the territory where your document was issued. For the latest fee details or to request a form, we recommend reaching out to our experts at the Legalization Service Centre (LSC).
Does an Apostille Verify the Document’s Content? No, an apostille does not verify the content within a document. It only confirms the authority of the signer and the legitimacy of the issuing organization.
An apostille is required solely for countries participating in the Hague Apostille Convention. Non-member countries still require the standard authentication and legalization process.
In Canada, competent authorities in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan are designated to issue an apostille for eligible documents.
Although an apostille itself does not expire, the legal validity of the certified document may vary based on the laws of the destination country. It’s important to verify specific requirements in the country where the document will be used.
