RCMP Criminal Record Checks From Italy: Canadian Criminal Records Through Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services
The full criminal record check process for applicants in Italy: submit your fingerprint card, we handle the RCMP submission and deliver a certified Canadian certificate — no trip to a Canadian police detachment required.
RCMP Certified Fingerprint Service for Criminal Record Checks in Canada and Abroad
The Legalization Service Centre is an RCMP-accredited private fingerprinting company in Canada. We convert ink fingerprints taken in Italy into digital form and transmit them to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police through Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS), the unit in Ottawa that holds the National Repository of Criminal Records.
Among the first companies licensed by the RCMP for electronic fingerprint submission, we are trusted by Italian employers, immigration lawyers, consulates and Canadian citizens living in Rome, Milan, Florence and across Italy. Our fingerprinting services are used for immigration, citizenship, visa, employment and volunteer applications worldwide.
The service exists because a name-based criminal record check — a search by name and date of birth in the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) — is rarely accepted abroad. Italian authorities want certified criminal records confirmed by fingerprint. We give every applicant, in Canada or outside of Canada, a secure and dependable way to get them.
Choose Us for Canadian Criminal Record Checks From Italy
- Pick Your Processing Method: Apply entirely online from Italy by mailing your fingerprint card and forms to our Ottawa office, or visit us in person if you are in Canada. Both options produce the same RCMP certified criminal record check.
- Follow Detailed Instructions: After choosing a route, each applicant receives step-by-step guidance on the criminal record check process — which forms to complete, how the fingerprints must be rolled, and which government-issued IDs to include.
- Receive Your Certificate Anywhere: When the RCMP releases the fingerprint results, we courier the certificate to Italy or any other country. An apostille can be added so the document is accepted by the Questura, a Prefettura, an Italian employer or a court.

Get Your Certified Criminal Record Check From Italy (Online or In Ottawa)
Applicants living in Italy can have their fingerprints taken on the RCMP C-216C card by a local police service (Polizia di Stato or Carabinieri, where they offer the service), a notary public, an embassy or consulate, or a private fingerprinting company working under an agreement with a local police service. Mail the originals to us and we handle the fingerprint-based criminal record check from there. If you are in Canada, in-person digital fingerprinting is available at our Ottawa, Ontario office. No visit to an RCMP detachment is necessary — we submit on your behalf, and the certificate is issued by the RCMP itself.

Get Your RCMP Criminal Record Check
You'll get a fingerprint-based certificate issued by the RCMP. We digitize your ink-and-roll fingerprints and submit them electronically — you can be anywhere in the world.
In order to process the RCMP CRC certificate we need to receive from the clients their fingerprints taken on C-216C form or similar and other completed forms provided in the Application Package below.
To get started, select the “General” tab for most countries and the “Personal Use” tab if you need the CRC Certificate for immigration to USA.
1. Application Package

We need two (2) complete sets, with all fields filled in and the name, signature and stamp of the official who took them.
Fingerprints must be clear and high-quality — not smudged, faded, or blurred. All ridge details must be clearly visible on the form. Failure to provide clear, high-quality fingerprints may result in the RCMP rejecting the submission.
Fingerprints outside Canada can be taken by the following entities:
- Police Service
- Embassy / Consulate
- Government Department
- Notary Public
- Foreign private fingerprinting company with an MOU with a local police force or government department
Under "Reason for application", tick the option that matches your case — Visa/Waiver, Canadian Citizenship, Employment, Adoption, and so on.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Fingerprint-Based Criminal Record Check and Why Does Italy Require It?
A fingerprint-based criminal record check is the only version of Canadian criminal records that the RCMP certifies. Instead of matching a name and date of birth, CCRTIS compares your fingerprints against every entry in the national repository, so the criminal record check will determine with certainty whether criminal convictions exist under your identity. Italian immigration offices, employers and courts ask for this document precisely because a name-based criminal record check cannot rule out a record filed under a different spelling or after a name change.
The certificate discloses criminal convictions in accordance with the Criminal Records Act. A record suspension (formerly a pardon) removes a conviction from the report; conditional discharges are purged after a set period. A vulnerable sector check goes further and searches for pardoned sexual offences when an applicant will work with vulnerable persons — for example, in a school, hospital or volunteer organization. For most Italian purposes, the standard certified check is what is required.
How Does the Criminal Record Check Process Work From Italy?
Start by downloading the Application Package and completing the applicant information form, the consent form and our order form. Next, have your fingerprints rolled in ink on the C-216C card at a local police service, a notary or an accredited provider — two complete sets. Email us scans of the forms together with two pieces of government-issued identification. We verify every field before you courier the originals to Ottawa.
When the package arrives, we digitize the prints and transmit them to CCRTIS electronically; each submission receives a Document Control Number for tracking. The RCMP then searches the National Repository of Criminal Records and issues the certificate, which we forward to you. Our team confirms that the reason for the check — visa, citizenship, employment, name change, adoption — is recorded correctly, because a mismatch between the consent form and the purpose is the most common cause of delay.
What Is the Difference Between an RCMP Certificate and a Police Information Check From a Local Detachment?
A police information check or basic criminal record check from a municipal police service or an RCMP detachment is name-based: the officer runs your name and date of birth through CPIC and local databases. It is fast and inexpensive, but it is not certified, it may reflect only one jurisdiction, and in-person attendance is usually required. In British Columbia, for example, the B.C. provincial program and local detachments generally serve residents of that province only.
The RCMP certified criminal record check is national, fingerprint-based and issued by the RCMP in Ottawa. It is the document Italian authorities recognize, and the only one that can be apostilled for use in Italy. Both types confirm whether you were charged or convicted, and both note outstanding charges and warrants, judicial orders and any sex offender registration where disclosure is permitted — but only the fingerprint-based version carries RCMP certification.
Who in Italy Typically Needs Canadian Criminal Records?
The most common applicants are:
- Canadians applying for a permesso di soggiorno, Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) or a long-stay visa, where a police record from every country of residence is required
- Italian nationals who lived in Canada and now need proof of no criminal activity for employment, professional licensing or public safety roles
- Volunteers and staff working with children or vulnerable persons, where a vulnerable sector check may be requested
- Applicants for Canadian citizenship, permanent residence or a record suspension who are currently living in Italy
If you have ever been convicted of a crime in Canada, the certificate will show it; a clean result confirms the absence of any criminal background in the national repository. Each applicant must sign the RCMP consent form, and the certificate is released only for the stated purpose.
What Are the Processing Times for a Certified Criminal Record Check From Italy?
Processing times depend on fingerprint quality, the accuracy of your personal information and whether your prints match a record. When no criminal records are found, the RCMP typically returns the fingerprint results within a few business days of electronic submission. Including courier transit from Italy, plan for roughly five to twenty business days in total. If a record exists, expect a longer verification period.
Rejected fingerprint cards are the main source of delay — smudged ridges, missing officer stamps or an unsigned consent form all force a resubmission. We check your scans first to prevent this. If Italian authorities require an apostille on the RCMP certificate, allow a few additional days for authentication in Canada. From the first email to the finished certificate, the Legalization Service Centre keeps every criminal record check compliant, secure and on time.
