During your appointment, you need to provide two pieces of government issued identification (one with a photo) so we can verify your identity. We then use approved biometric scanners to provide fingerprints electronically. If you live outside Canada, we can digitize ink fingerprints taken by your local police or an authorized fingerprinting agency and securely transmit them to the RCMP.

Each submission generates a 20-digit Document Control Number (DCN), which links your transaction to your request. All data is securely transmitted to the RCMP’s Criminal Real Time Identification Services.

The results may include criminal convictions, details needed for a record suspension, or other findings depending on the purpose of your application. The RCMP returns the outcome as a certified criminal record check, police information check, or criminal background report, including criminal record check results required by employers, immigration authorities, or licensing bodies. When there are no findings of guilt, processing typically takes about three business days.

Ink fingerprints, which involve rolling black ink on paper, are still accepted by some international police agencies, but they remain slower and less efficient for Canadian checks. The RCMP-accredited Legalization Service Centre can digitize ink fingerprints collected abroad and submit them electronically.

Digital fingerprinting captures prints through certified scanners and submits them instantly to CCRTIS. This method improves accuracy, speed, and security by reducing errors and preventing mismatched identities within the Canadian Police Information Centre system and the broader police database used for national verification.

Both ink and digital methods confirm your identity and criminal history, but digital fingerprinting offers faster results and fewer delays.

When no records are found, digital fingerprint submissions are usually processed within three business days. If your application includes references from an employer, immigration officer, or licensing authority, additional verification may take longer to process as part of the overall application process.

Delays may occur if your DCN, ORI number, or date of birth are entered incorrectly, or if there are inconsistencies between your personal information and government databases. If your Document Control Number has expired (after 12 months) or you need to resubmit fingerprints, our team will help you schedule a new session as soon as possible.
