Embassy of Pakistan in Ottawa, Canada: Apostille and Authentication Services for Use in Pakistan
The Apostille Convention entered into force in Canada on January 11, 2024, making the use of Canadian public documents easier in Pakistan.
What is the Impact of the Apostille Convention on Document Authentication Services in Canada?
The High Commission of Pakistan in Ottawa provides consular services for Pakistani citizens, the Pakistani community in Canada, and individuals requiring Canadian documents for use in Pakistan. The High Commission and the Consulate General of Pakistan assist with passports, visas, civil registration matters, and guidance relating to certain legal, commercial, and official documents. Individuals, students, and businesses across Canada, including Nunavut and the Yukon Territory, may also seek information regarding document requirements for travel, education, employment, immigration, and business activities involving Pakistan.
Since Canada joined the Hague Conference on Private International Law Apostille Convention on January 11, 2024, eligible Canadian public documents may now be apostilled for use in Pakistan. Documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, academic diplomas, and corporate records can receive an apostille certificate from the appropriate Canadian competent authority, helping simplify document recognition between both member countries. Additional requirements may still apply depending on the receiving institution or authority in Pakistan.
Our Legalization Service Centre (LSC) team assists individuals and businesses with apostille and authentication services for documents intended for use in Pakistan. We support clients across Canada and internationally, including in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, and other major cities, with personal, academic, and corporate documents through efficient and expedited processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Would a Canadian Document Not Be Eligible for an Apostille for Pakistan?
Authentication is only possible for documents with an original seal or signature. Photocopies or documents that do not meet the above requirements will not be issued an apostille. If the seal or signature of the document cannot be verified, Global Affairs Canada will stop the authentication process.
Documents having laminated or bonded surfaces do not meet the requirements for stamping or apostille. Documents containing materials that prevent stamping are not eligible for an apostille.
Certificates issued by religious institutions, such as baptismal and marriage certificates, are not qualified for official document services or apostille confirmation. Only documentation issued in Canada will be considered valid. Currently, services for authenticating and apostilling foreign documents are unavailable. A certificate number cannot be issued for documents from organizations without official authorization, as an apostille cannot be issued in such cases.
Global Affairs Canada may refuse to validate an apostille and notify the appropriate authorities if it has reasonable grounds to believe that a document will be used fraudulently or in a manner contrary to established standards.
Are Canadian Documents Required to Be Notarized Before an Apostille?
Prior to receiving authentication from the relevant government authority, specific documents, including those issued by the Government of Canada, are required to be notarized by a notary public. The competent authority that issues apostilles is based on the province or territory in which your document has been notarized.
Enhancing the authentication and apostille processes can greatly decrease the time required for your document to be used in Pakistan. Legalization Service Centre (LSC) provides notarization services to enhance your communication with official notaries.
Is Translation Required for Documents Prior to Authentication and Apostille for Pakistan?
Documents issued in languages other than English or French may require a certified translation before they can be processed for authentication or apostille in Canada. Translation requirements can vary depending on the document type and the requirements of the receiving authority in Pakistan.
Where translations are required, they should be prepared by a certified translator who is a member of a recognized provincial or territorial translators’ association in Canada. Some documents may also require a notarized translator’s affidavit stating that the translation is accurate, before apostille processing.
The appropriate translation and apostille process depends on the specific document and its intended use. Well-translated and prepared documents help reduce delays and ensure compliance with the Canadian apostille requirements for use in Pakistan.
How Much Time Does It Take to Apostille and Authenticate Canadian Documents for Pakistan?
As of late September 2024, the authentication branch of Global Affairs Canada processes apostille requests within a timeframe of 10 working days. Please allow five business days for the return shipment of your documents.
The Hague Apostille Convention allows provincial authorities to authenticate documents issued in Canada, effective January 11, 2024. Processing times may vary by provincial office.
The Legalization Service Centre (LSC) recognizes the significance of promptly obtaining apostilled documents for use in Pakistan. Through the application of our knowledge and partnerships, we improve process efficiency, as evidenced by our successful acquisition of an apostille certificate within one business day.
Key Considerations for Obtaining Apostilled Canadian Documents for Pakistan
The cost of apostille services will vary depending on the type of document and where it was issued. Please contact our specialists to obtain the most up-to-date pricing information and request a form. We focus on verifying documents for use in Pakistan in compliance with all current rules.
Does an apostille certify the content of the document? The apostille certificate does not authenticate the content of a document. This statement affirms the signer’s authority and boosts the issuing authority’s credibility, ensuring its recognition in Pakistan.
Apostille certificates hold significant importance in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, such as Pakistan. Countries that are not members continue to rely on traditional methods of authentication and legalization or attestation, which requires the legalization of documents.
Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan are provinces in Canada authorized to issue apostille certificates.
