The UAE is one of the most popular destinations for Indian travellers, whether you are visiting for tourism, attending a business event, or relocating for work or family reasons. For many Indian citizens living in Canada, UAE visa rules can feel confusing because eligibility is not based on your Indian passport alone.
Some Indian passport holders in Canada may be able to get a UAE visa on arrival if they also have valid Canadian residency documents. If you’re moving to the UAE for long-term reasons, such as working or living there, or to sponsor a family member, you might also need to provide Canadian documents, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, police checks, or school records. To be accepted by UAE authorities, these documents often require attestation or legalization.

UPDATE: The United Arab Emirates has broadened its visa-on-arrival programme for Indian nationals to cover individuals who hold valid residence permits from six additional countries. Effective 13 February 2025, Indian citizens travelling on ordinary passports and possessing valid residence permits issued by Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, or Singapore are eligible to receive a visa on arrival at any entry point in the UAE.
This update builds on the existing eligibility framework, under which Indian nationals may obtain a visa on arrival if they hold a valid visa, residence permit, or Green Card issued by the United States, the European Union, or the United Kingdom.
Understanding UAE Visa Requirements

Types of UAE Visas
The UAE offers several visa categories, including:
- Tourist visa – For short-term leisure travel
- Transit visa – Valid for 48 or 96 hours
- Visit visa – For family or short-term sponsored visits
- Business visa – For meetings or professional visits
- Residence visa – For long-term stays such as employment, investment, or family sponsorship
Each visa has specific conditions and eligibility requirements.
Visa Requirements for Indians
For Indian passport holders, standard UAE visa requirements generally include:
- A passport valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry
- A completed visa application form
- Confirmed return or onward travel ticket
- Proof of accommodation in the UAE
- Additional supporting documents, depending on the visa category
Some Indian passport holders may qualify for a visa on arrival, subject to eligibility rules. Visa application fees are non-refundable.
Validity Period of UAE Visas
UAE visas have:
- An entry validity period (time allowed to enter after issuance, often calculated from the date of issue)
- A stay duration (number of days from the date of entry)
Tourist visas commonly allow 30 or 60 days of stay, and sometimes 90 days. In many cases, the entry validity may be valid for 30 days or 60 days from the date the visa is granted, meaning you must enter within 30 days from the date stated on the visa. Extensions may be possible under current regulations, and overstaying results in fines.

Canadian Document Attestation for UAE Visa
Importance of Document Attestation
Step-by-Step: How Canadian Documents Are Prepared for Use in the UAE
Usually, the steps to get Canadian documents accepted by UAE authorities are as follows:
Step 1: Confirm Document Eligibility
Confirm the type of document, the issuing authority, and whether notarization or a certified true copy is required before it can be submitted.
Step 2: Canadian Apostille
It should be apostilled by the relevant Canadian competent authority (either one of the provincial authorities or Global Affairs Canada, depending on jurisdiction).
Step 3: UAE Embassy Legalization in Canada
Because the UAE is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, the apostilled document must then be legalized by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in Canada.
Step 4: Final Attestation in the UAE (if required)
Upon arrival in the UAE, documents may have to go through final attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being accepted by local immigration, licensing and education authorities.
Requirements may differ depending on the document type, issuing province, visa category, and the UAE authority requesting the documentation.
Common Documents That Need Attestation
The documents to be attested are dependent on the category of visa and the purpose of use within the UAE. Common examples include:
Educational Documents
- Degree certificates
- Diplomas
- Academic transcripts (if requested)
Personal Documents
- Marriage certificates (for spouse sponsorship)
- Birth certificates (for child sponsorship)
- Police clearance certificates (if required)
Commercial Documents
- Trade licenses
- Memorandum of Association
- Power of Attorney
- Corporate agreements or contracts
Applicants should confirm exact requirements with their employer, sponsor, or relevant UAE authority, as document requirements may vary by visa type and Emirate.
Tips for a Successful UAE Visa Application
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One of the most common reasons for UAE visa delays or rejections is giving incorrect or incomplete information. Before submitting, applicants should carefully review all the information, especially passport information and any supporting documents. Some common mistakes are:
- Incorrect passport number, name spelling, or date of birth
- Passport validity of less than six months from the intended date of entry
- Uploading unclear or incomplete supporting documents
- Applying under the wrong visa category
- Assuming visa fees are refundable (they are generally non-refundable once processed)
Verifying all eligibility criteria before submission helps reduce the risk of rejection or processing delays.
Understanding the Processing Time
The normal visa processing time in the UAE is determined by the type of visa, the name of the sponsor and the issuing authority. There are no guarantees about timelines, but people generally expect:
- Tourist visas: Often processed within a few working days
- Employment visas: Require employer sponsorship and approval
- Residence visas: Involve multiple stages, including entry permit issuance, medical fitness testing, Emirates ID registration, and residence stamping (once the permit is approved)
Because additional approvals or background checks may be required, applicants should apply well in advance of their intended travel date to accommodate possible delays.
Tracking Your Visa Application Status
The issuing authority and the Emirate affect visa tracking. Most of the time, applicants can check the status of their application through the appropriate immigration platform:
- Federal visas: Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security
- Dubai-issued visas: General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs
To track an application, applicants generally need:
- Application reference number
- Passport number
- Nationality
Regularly monitoring visa status allows applicants to respond promptly if additional documentation or clarification is requested, especially for visa types that allow multiple entries.
